ACT 1

Once in our far distant past, this place had no name. Then still unmapped, its exact location hardly known as it was isolated from the rest of the thriving communities by restless waters and rugged terrain, its early residents were as equally obscure and humble, silently surviving in life either as farmers, fishermen or wood workers.

Then one day, this unnamed place's and its nameless people’s obscurity and silence were threatened, the source of such threat being more obscure and silencing than anyone could ever imagine. Cursed beings who were half-human, half-monster entered, nay, invaded the sleeping barangay and their very sight alone was enough to bring fear to the hearts and minds of the residents.

"The DUWAGAWS! They still exist?!" exclaimed one of the elders.

'Duwagaw' was a derisive term that is no longer used today, perhaps because no such being has ever been sighted again, meaning not after when that fateful episode in the history of our province had come to an end. But we are going too far ahead of the story.

The word 'Duwagaw' was derived from the Tagalog words Duwag (coward) and Halimaw (monster). Legends say that the Duwagaws were Filipino traitors during the Japanese occupation who were cursed by Edom, a most powerful warlock (mangkukulam), the last known descendant of the ancient babaylans (shamans) NOT to experience mortal death until they suffer a thousand mortal wounds, each mortal wound inflicted by an innocent man, woman or child “for the innocents suffer the most from the cowardice and treachery of the corrupt”

Edom

The duwagaws that attacked this unnamed place were extra vicious and ruthless. Driven by hunger, these cursed beings spared no home nor property, no crop nor herd.

The people of this place were not prepared to defend themselves from the wrath of the duwagaws. They immediately decided that for them to survive, they needed a martyr, a saviour, a hero. Yet no one dared to come forward to offer himself or herself for the great task.

"Kill me! I beg you. Kill me now!"

"If you kill my possession, you will only unleash the greater powers that I possess."

"Viem"

"You clearly are ignorant of the warning about us in your holy Scripture", taunts the demon Viem. "Do not dare to mention the holy writings. You are a demon, a liar and a blasphemer!" cried Crisostomo in anger.

"When an evil spirit leaves a person, it travels through the desert, looking for a place to rest. But when the demon doesn't find a place, it says, 'I will go back to the home I left.' When it gets there and finds the place empty, clean and neat, it goes off and finds seven other evil spirits even worse than itself. They all come and make their home there, and the person ends up in worse shape than before. That's how it will be with you evil people of today." - Matthew 12:43-45

"No! Don't! Close that evil book! Don't seek its dark knowledge. Don't use it against me! I have suffered long enough! Have mercy, please! Have mercy on me!" "Believe me, Edomo. This is mercy."

A Good Story : A Letter to a Fool

For the price of Php 36 (roughly US 0.70 cents) in a small, nondescript shop for pre-owned books, this codex, which I picked up from a stack of a 'mini-mountain' of other books and titles, turned out to be my virtual key for an enviable access to a world of  priceless, timeless stories.  In no time, a flood of inspirations was borne out of each ancient, mostly personal tales came to me unceasingly. It wouldn't allow me to breathe until I create new stories out the old. The following is one of them. A Letter to a Fool  by  Ramon E. Bayron Inspired by King Agrippa's Letter to Emperor Caligula (40 CE)
